Contemporary Rug Art by Jan Kath

IMG_0316

A new showroom in Vancouver opened a few days ago in the Design District with a great party and a display of unique rugs and pillows.

They were all designed by Jan Kath, a third generation of a family of carpet dealers. When he was a young boy he used to visit manufacturers in Iran and Nepal with his father. Many trips later on his own and long periods spent in Asia and the Middle East the connection with the “world of carpet” was reestablished.

Now Kath is bringing back classical elements of Oriental and Middle East carpets with a twist of contemporary, minimalist design.

The huge showrooms was filled with diverse styles of rugs, some were homage to traditional Oriental rugs from the collection Erased Heritage others were vibrant florals from the collection From Russia With Love then monochromatics from Le Maroc Blanc and charming simplicity of the ones from The Lost Weave.

Perhaps the great Vancouver muralist Stefano Piccone (on the right with a friend) will  be inspired even further by all the patterns seen on these walls?

I loved the rustic drawers with natural wood on the front, when open they display many colorful samples.

The beautifully radiant, six months pregnant Shannon Heth of Heth PR was modeling for me against a fantastic textured silky rug.

We all went home with a treasure of books about Jan Kath’s rugs, even if we all wished to squeeze instead a rug in the gift bag…

Paris: classic soul, contemporary function

casa-parigi-double-g-01_MGbig

In this elegant and charming Parisian apartment the classic soul of the building shines accompanied by contemporary comfort and style. Fireplaces, frames, millwork of late 1800 were restored to create a background for a young couple lifestyle. The sofa Groundpiece is designed by Aldo Citterio for Flexform.

Many pieces are vintage, like this amazing desk and the re-upholstered green chair in the main bedroom. The scheme color for the whole apartment envelope goes from off white to luminescent grey to charcoal grey. Great choice to make colored pieces pop unexpectedly.

Danish 1960’s chair surround a table made of oak and natural stone designed by Studio Double G, the unusual suspension light is Mykiss Fish by Minke Van Voorthuizen.

In the modern kitchen the cabinet has mirrored doors to maintain the antique atmosphere.

Another vintage discover at Flea-market Paul Bert: the red-orange leather chair and stool. A pop of vibrant color against the charcoal walls and millwork.

The bathroom is stunning, pure luxury, with a carved fireplace mantel, antique mirror, chandelier.

3 dimensional art on the wall, found at Marché Paul Bert, like the black leather chair and industrial lamp in the previous image.

The young couple has obviously a good eye in discovering treasures to add interest to an already stunning surrounding.

As last year Dinner by Design was a well received event, using the creativity of several designers for wonderful and so diverse table settings.
